Making legal language make sense
A project by Lily Defendini to bridge the gap between legal language and public understanding.
About Me
My name is Lily Defendini. I am a junior at Farmingdale Senior High School in Farmingdale, New York. I started this project because I noticed a problem: legal language is often designed to confuse, and that confusion leads to silence. I've seen how easily people get lost in legal settings; not because they don't care, but because the words being used feel like a different language. This project was created to change that. By translating complex legal language into clear, accessible explanations, I hope to give people the confidence to understand, question, and use their rights.
A right is only as strong as a person's ability to understand it.
Why This Exists
Legal language is often complex, technical, and difficult to understand. For many people, this creates a barrier between them and their own rights. This project was created to make legal information clear, accessible, and usable. Everyone should be able to understand the laws that affect their lives without needing a legal background.
The Idea
This website brings together two things: a plain-language legal dictionary, and a "Know Your Rights" section that explains the Constitution in real terms. The goal is not just to define legal terms, but to explain what they actually mean in everyday situations.
The Purpose
Understanding legal language is directly connected to confidence. When people do not understand what is being said, they are less likely to ask questions, speak up, or advocate for themselves. This project is designed to change that by making legal concepts easier to follow and apply.
The Bigger Picture
This work is part of a larger effort to improve communication within the legal system. Clear language helps build trust, reduce confusion, and encourage participation. Legal rights are only meaningful if they are understood.
- Build trust
- Reduce confusion
- Encourage participation
